Have you ever looked around your living room and felt like something was missing, but you couldn't quite figure out what?
Maybe you like your furniture, you've chosen colors you love, and you've added a few decorations, but the room still doesn't feel quite finished. The good news is that you don't always need new furniture or a complete makeover to make a room feel more inviting.
Sometimes, a few simple changes can make all the difference!
Here are three things I always look at when a living room isn't quite coming together.
1. Make Sure Your Rug Is the Right Size
One of the most common decorating mistakes I see is choosing an area rug that's too small.
A rug should help connect your furniture and define your seating area. When it's too small, the furniture can feel disconnected, almost like everything is floating around the room.
My designer tip: Try to choose a rug that's large enough for at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs to rest on it.
You don't necessarily need an enormous rug, but choosing the right size can make your living room feel more balanced and intentional.
2. Add Layers of Lighting
Lighting is one of those things that can completely change how a room feels.
If your living room relies entirely on overhead lighting, it might be missing some of that warmth and coziness you're looking for.
I love incorporating table lamps, floor lamps, and accent lighting throughout a room. They create softer pockets of light and make the space feel more comfortable, especially in the evenings.
My designer tip: Try adding a lamp near your sofa or favorite reading chair. You might be surprised by how much difference one little change can make!
3. Don't Forget the Finishing Touches
Sometimes a room has all the main pieces it needs, but it's missing those little details that make it feel like home.
Throw pillows, cozy blankets, artwork, greenery, and interesting textures can help bring everything together.
The key is choosing pieces that complement one another without making the room feel cluttered.
My designer tip: Mix a few different textures, such as linen, woven baskets, soft throws, or natural wood. These details add warmth and interest without overwhelming the room.
A Beautiful Room Doesn't Have to Happen All at Once
Creating a home you love doesn't mean you have to replace everything or tackle an entire room at once.
Sometimes it's simply about looking at what you already have and figuring out what's missing.
And if you're feeling stuck on a decorating decision, I'd love to help!
